Founder: RITA KALEGGA

My Inspiration came from the story of Ruth in the Bible, She worked tirelessly to help her widowed mother-in-law considering she was a widow her self

My name is Rita Kalegga. I became a widow in 1998 and I was left with four children and a grand child, at the time I was a refugee in kenya, with no job and with no source of income.

Having lived in Kenya and raising my children as a single mother, I have to say, that was the hardest and most stressful situation I have ever been in, tears every night, questions with no answers, alway looking and praying for a way to make a better life for me and my children.

I look back and see the struggle of widows in Africa and see myself, thats why I found it necessary to stand and support my fellow widows who face poverty and need help.

VISION:

“One Widow Helping Another to Help Themselves”

To alleviate the suffering of widows and orphans who have been impacted by the aids pandemic, famine and/or the affects of poverty, by improving their standard of living and quality of life.

MISSION:

To identify areas of most critical need and provide practical, financial, spiritual and emotional support to empower women otherwise bound by poverty to improve their quality of life by providing mentoring, encouragement and initial capital to promote income generating businesses, to equip them to make a positive change in their lives and impact the world around them.

GOALS:

Short-Term Goals

The short-term goals involve implementing the “empowerment program” initially on a small, manageable scale by providing assistance to 10 of the most needy widows in a selected town in Kenya.  They involve a five-phase strategy which are designed to be implemented within a one year period.

Phase 1  - Planning & Prep Phase:
Develop a support network and support team in Canada, raise required financial backing, finalize the town in Kenya, establish contacts in the target area, develop assessment/planning resources for implementation, as well as personal preparation.

Phase 2 – Candidate Selection Phase:
Selection of high risk widows in most need, yet with personal skills that will help ensure success of the business venture.

Phase 3 – Business Development Phase:
Identify and assess the viability of various business proposals, including development of business plan(s).

Phase 4 – Support Network, Mentorship and Accountability Phase:
Develop a local support network/mentors to provide ongoing encouragement and direction to the widows in their business endeavours; a process to ensure accountability for resource use; and a means for follow-up.

Phase 5 – Review and Assessment Phase:
Periodic assessment and evaluation of the success of the existing projects, provide encouragement and resources for continual improvement.

Long-Term Goals

The long-term goals include:
§  To expand the existing model to new candidates by establishing a system of business-generating loans to more widows with no other source of income;
§  To support the expansion of existing small businesses, where feasible, to provide additional opportunities for employment and growth.
§  One additional long-term goal is the development of an orphanage, with the assistance and involvement of partner-widows, to further give back to the community and meet the physical, social and educational needs of children orphaned by aids/poverty.

DAUGHTER'S OF RUTH / BLANKET FOR GRANDMA:

Daughter's of Ruth/Blanket for grandma is a organisation aiming to improve the living standards of women in the rural parts of Africa, women who are widows and grandmothers or both, and also improve the lives of their children and grandchildren.
Our mission is to find 10 women who are in need of help, either, morally or financially. Its not going to be easy but with prayers, support and donation, we will be able to Provide the help that each woman needs, whether it be financial, child rearing, moral support, entrepreneurial skills or other needs.

Blanket for Grandma, will provide them with blankets, mosquito nets, clothes, shoes and food. Also find a way to help them get on their feet financially by providing a means of generating income, either by providing sewing machines, grain seeds, or capital to start small businesses. After that group has been helped and are standing on their own feet, another group of 10 women will be found and assisted according to ones needs on and on. we will still keep checking on the first groups and keep supporting them and till we are sure that they are doing good.

OBJECTIVE: BLANKET FOR GRANDMA

Project Details:

GOAL:   $8,100     [$4,400 raised for now]
This Project is working towards reaching 10 women. Poverty eradication is the goal. The project goal specifically is to reach widowed women in remote parts of Kenya, that would not get the help otherwise.
I have Identified 10 women in Kenya that are either widowed, grandparents or both, that need the help this project is looking for. Like most developing countries, a kilogram of Sugar, one litre of cooking oil, a kilogram of rice, once a month with a mosquito net, and warm beddings for example a decent blanket thrown in there can support a grand mother. This will in return support her grandchildren, in turn support a village for one year. Each woman will be encouraged to remain in their community, with their family.
Please support this worth while Project.
